Latin American Art Gains Popularity
“Latin American Art” is a contentious and very broad term that incorporates pre-Colonial, Colonial, an Independence period, Muralism from the last century and the modern era that has seen the emergence of exciting new talents. According to Virgilio Garza (Head of Latin American Art at Christies) said “As a term Latin American art is very, very broad because it doesn’t really limit a time span. Latin America is so complex and there are lot regions so you can’t really speak of one Latin American art. Even though there was a Latin American identity there was a lot of artist, developed in the early 20th century, who was looking at Europe rather than Brazil.
A new generation of Latin American artist is ensuring that works from the region are attracting international buyers in increasing numbers. Up until thirty years ago the majority of works coming out of the region were purchase by wealthy Latin American families who often their collections up over many generations. Now in the past four years there are other players who have changed the dynamic. There are Europeans, Middle Eastern, and some Asian buyers looking for specific things and even Russians have been regular buyers. Bonhams, an auction house have become aware of the increasing interest in the region’s art and told Alternative Latin Investor they are working towards a fully committed Latin American catalogue in the future. Cindy Cronk, a street specialist for Bonhams, base in California, sees a long term potential for South American art “I thinks it’s been on the radar for a while. It’s slowly growing which is actually more stable than say with contemporary Chinese artists, now their works aren’t selling. I think it’s encouraging to see it slowly building up. I think it gives more stability.”
A today Latin American art attracts the interest of investors from all over the world. Previously only the wealthy families from countries like Mexico, Brazil and Argentina that idolized the South American artists. These Latin American arts are not only bided by Alternative Latin Investors but also there are majority that comes from the U.S.A and Mexico. I believe that art is really a good investment today that is why it has been very popular today. There are many established artists that are selling their arts even the price are very high because there are some believe that this is a good investment. They say the number one rule in this investment is you should research first then buy what you like. Almost remember that buying arts from a very established artist is a good investment. I guess every Latin American country has some artist like in Colombia, Fernando Botero. And another example of the strength of Latin American Art is the museum of Latin American Art that can be found in the Long Beach in California that is dedicated to the collector. There are serious collectors in Southern California that the museum benefited to them because they donate their collections to the museum for the purpose of exhibit and sometimes for charity fund.
